Contiqua transforms industrial waste through design. In every industrial process waste materials are generated that cannot be processed further and end up as garbage in landfills and incinerators. Considering the limited amount of resources available on our planet, it is essential to treat these resources with care. That’s why Contiqua proposes new products that are able to use waste materials to their highest and best use. We are first presenting products created by Matyáš Fuchs, Mili Havrlantová a Lucie Houdková. These first three collections fall into the categories of product design, fashion accessories and jewelry. Matyáš Fuchs is the creator of the interior light fixtures Infinite Light that is created from reflective materials taken from road signs. Mili Havrlantová proposed a ladies’ purse, mens’ wallet and other products made from first-class leathers, recovered from the creation of office furniture; and Lucie Houdková proposes jewelry made from wood, that was otherwise destined to become Petrof Pianos.

I had the opportunity to work as a furniture maker as a designer for many years, with smaller-sized furniture making companies. I always wanted to create furniture with interesting designs, but this isn’t always possible when quickly working with custom orders. Because of this, I created my own business with my own hands, the collection of Mary studio, which should combine the quality and range of options in modern creations with the decorative elements and simple forms of historical furniture. Woodcuts are malleable and designed with simple motifs like plants and trees – classic and modern. Similar pieces created with sandblasting are repeated on many glass panels. I was brought to this style through a deep relationship with everything that is timeless, has a pleasant atmosphere, and that has engrained detail… It doesn’t have to be a bad thing that “retro” is a modern trend, this only reflects the needs and desires of people. Even if this trend changes over time, I believe that manufactures designed tastefully, are well-made, and from natural materials will always be beautiful. Another reason to choose style, design, and well-finished furniture. It is a pleasure to carve wood and develop a relationship with beautiful wood with which I have developed my decorative skills.

In the successful project FOREWEAR, with which we won the international, Social Impact Award 2013 at the Hub Prague, we address the issue of growth in underused clothing that we collect from firms and process. A part of this goes to people in need (for example clients of Borůvka Praha o.p.s.) and unwearable pieces are sent for processing into new materials. These new, nonwoven textiles are sent to workshops to be made into practical, functional, and fashionable goods (such as covers for mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, etc.) These ecologically made goods are used by firms as branded gifts for their employees, partners and interns. We also support responsible societal consumption of goods, sustainability in the environment, and we give work to less fortunate individuals in protected workshops.

The audience was engaged in the conversation as well, through the use of red and green cards, with which they could express their opinions. For the Freelancing club, the panel discussion was a pilot project. According to the audience the event was a success and will likely be put on again in the spring.

On Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 at the Institution of Translation Studies at the Philosophical Faculty at Charles University a panel discussion took place called “New students: don’t be scared to become an entrepreneur.” Young translators and interpreters talked about their experiences as new entrepreneurs to students of the Institute

Sobotka “Entrepreneurship is one of the key factors in maintaining economic growth and high employment. It is in the interest of the entire society to create beneficial conditions for independent and responsible entrepreneurship. That is why we are gradually breaking down barriers, that hold back the development of entrepreneurs, and at the same time are widening the financial support for small and medium sized businesses. And we are not forgetting about those individuals that are preparing to become entrepreneurs.”

Mgr. Bohuslav Sobotka, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

“The week of entrepreneurship, is as last year, offering a very interesting program, particularly for young people offering inspiration and original thinking. Its main advantage however, is to offer direct contacts to other similarly motivated people and experienced specialists that are not afraid of sharing their experiences and giving advice for successful entrepreneurship.”

Libor Akrman, Editor of ‘Byznys Dotyk’

“I was always envious of those with a talent at entrepreneurship. To a large extent it is a way of thinking, which I have never been able to acquire. But it is a trade that is able to be learned and can be perfected. For these reasons, it is good that the week of entrepreneurship takes place.”
